Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about kayak courses, equipment, safety and practical information — all in one place.

Requirements

What do you need to participate?

Do I need to be able to swim to paddle a kayak?

Yes, you must be able to swim at least 200 metres. This is a requirement for all courses and rental. You should also be comfortable in water.

Do I need to be in good physical shape?

You don't need to be an athlete. Normal fitness is sufficient for most courses. I adapt the pace and content to the group. The foundation course is 16 hours over two days, so some endurance is an advantage.

What is the age limit?

The minimum age is 16 years. Participants under 18 need written consent from a guardian.

Practical

All the practical things you're wondering about

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety always comes first. In bad weather, the course may be moved to another date. I make the decision in consultation with you and give notice as early as possible. A bit of rain is rarely a problem — wind and waves are what I assess.

What do I need to bring?

Equipment can be rented in addition to the course price. You need: wool or synthetic base layers (never cotton), extra change of clothes for afterwards, packed lunch and drinks, sunscreen and sunglasses. I recommend paddling shoes or shoes that can get wet.

What about equipment?

Equipment is rented separately. Kayak with complete equipment (paddle, buoyancy aid, spray skirt) costs NOK 300/day. Wetsuit costs NOK 300/day. Combo package NOK 500/day. See the rental page for full price list. If you have your own equipment, you're welcome to use it.

What about water temperature and clothing?

Water temperature in the Ålesund area varies from about 5°C in winter to 15°C in summer. On courses, wetsuits or appropriate clothing are always used. For paddling you wear wool or synthetic garments — never cotton, which doesn't retain warmth when wet.

What are the cancellation terms?

More than 14 days before: full refund. 7-14 days before: 50% refund. Less than 7 days: no refund. Exceptions are made for illness with a doctor's note. See general terms for details.

Courses

About courses, certification and the path forward

What is a Våttkort?

Våttkort is the Norwegian Paddling Federation's competence certificate. It shows that you have basic skills in sea kayaking and can paddle safely. You receive a Våttkort after passing the foundation course. The certificate is required by most rental places in Norway.

What happens after I complete the foundation course?

Then you can rent a kayak from Kajakkguiden (with a discount!), join group trips, and take advanced courses such as the technique course, rolling course and surf kayaking course. You're part of the paddling community!

Do you offer courses for companies?

Yes! I tailor courses and experiences for companies, team building and friend groups. Everything from intro courses to guided trips. Get in touch for a customised offer.

Can I bring my own kayak to a course?

Yes, you can. The kayak must be a sea kayak with hatch(es), and it must be approved in advance. Get in touch and I'll assess it with you.

Can I rent a kayak without a course?

You need a Våttkort or equivalent documented competence to rent a kayak from Kajakkguiden. Do you have experience from before? Get in touch and I'll assess it with you.

Safety

Your safety is always the top priority

Is kayak paddling safe?

With proper training, equipment and respect for weather and wind, kayak paddling is very safe. That's why I place great emphasis on safety in all courses. I follow the NPF guidelines and have a maximum of 8 participants per course.
