Trip Guide
Explore the Sunnmøre coast from a kayak. Here are my favorite trips — from calm fjord paddling to challenging coastal expeditions.
Handpicked paddling routes
From calm archipelago paddling to challenging coastal expeditions — find trips for all levels and ambitions.
Around Giske
A classic round trip around Giske offering varied paddling. You pass the historic Giske Church from the sea side, paddle along open coast with views of the ocean, and return through calmer waters. The trip requires stable weather and some experience.
Check wind forecasts carefully — westerly winds can make the west side challenging. Start early to have margins. Bring food and drink for a long day.
Around Valderøya
A calm trip in the archipelago around Valderøya. Perfect for beginners or those who want a relaxing paddle. The waters are sheltered and you paddle between islets and skerries with rich birdlife.
Great afternoon trip. Bring snacks and enjoy a break on one of the islets. Watch out for tides in shallow sounds.
Ålesund city centre from the sea
See Ålesund's famous Art Nouveau architecture from an entirely new angle — from the kayak. You paddle through Brosundet, along the harbour and out towards Skanseholmen. A unique experience even for those who know the city well.
Be aware of boat traffic in the harbour basin. Morning or evening gives best light for photos. Combine with a coffee on the wharf afterwards.
Ellingsøyfjorden
Ellingsøyfjorden offers calm fjord paddling with beautiful mountain formations on both sides. The waters are sheltered and suit beginners well. The fjord is also the location for Kajakkguiden's night paddling trips.
Try the fjord in the evening for a magical atmosphere. Keep an eye on the sky — white-tailed eagles are often seen here.
Vigra — the coast
Vigra's west side offers true coastal paddling with open sea, swells and dramatic landscape. For experienced paddlers seeking a challenge. The reward is spectacular nature and the feeling of mastering the elements.
Only for experienced paddlers in good weather. Check wave and wind forecasts carefully. Always have an alternative route. Never paddle alone here.
Skodje and inner waters
The Skodje area offers still, sheltered waters surrounded by green nature. Perfect for family trips or those who prefer calm surroundings. You paddle between islets in inner waters with few waves.
A great alternative when it's too windy on the coast. Nice for a picnic on one of the islets.
Paddle safely on your own
These trips are suggestions for those who already have a Paddle Certificate or equivalent competence. If you've completed a course and received your Paddle Certificate, you're ready to explore on your own — but always respect the sea.
New to kayaking?
Before heading out on your own, I strongly recommend taking a foundation course. You'll learn safety, paddling technique, seamanship and rescue — and receive the NPF Paddle Certificate required for kayak rental.
With your Paddle Certificate in hand, you can rent a kayak from Kajakkguiden and explore all these trips safely. Course participants also get a 100 NOK discount per day on rentals.
Important information
These trips are guidelines and assume good weather conditions. Conditions at sea can change rapidly. Always assess weather, wind, waves and your own skills before paddling. When in doubt — don't go, and choose an easier route.
